This is the tenth installment of a blog series we’re calling “Sarasota Sizzle.” What’s “sizzle,” you ask? The Blink;Tech team’s definition of “sizzle” is what happens at the local intersection of creativity, technology, and entrepreneurship. The more we look around us in Sarasota, the more we discover people, businesses, projects, and initiatives that “sizzle.” And when something sizzles, it’s too good not to share.
As one of the first companies to be incubated at the HuB, BioLucid has grown quite successfully over the last few years — and with this month’s release of a new digital health platform focused on “making health visual,” the company is advancing to a new level in health technology. One of the most prominent companies in Sarasota to employ recent Ringling grads and retain their creativity for the betterment of the community, BioLucid is already established as a powerhouse at the HuB, and now inhabits the majority of the second floor. By marrying art, science, and technology, BioLucid has developed a blue ocean strategy that is changing the healthcare conversation.
When the three forward-thinking founders — Lawrence Kiey, Jeff Hazelton, and Dale Park — started BioLucid, they knew the very simple premise of making health visual would, over time, have an impact on patients’ lives. Out of this foundational principle, Biolucid developed Living Medical Environments™, an interactive product designed to help pharmaceutical companies better communicate with customers. This was the beginning of really blending art, science, and technology in a way that was relevant to the healthcare industry. Not an easy task — but BioLucid was doing it, and they were doing it better than anyone. The founders’ concept of making health visual expanded into a vision on which to grow the BioLucid team.
Realizing that not every Ringling student would get hired by Pixar or Disney, and that many didn’t want to leave Sarasota, the BioLucid founders offered the opportunity for many of these students to stay in Sarasota and use their skills, talents, and abilities to directly impact healthcare and improve patient lives. Within the first two years of operation, over 40 countries were using content developed by BioLucid.
Today, BioLucid employs around 30 people on a full-time basis; staying small, nimble, and agile gives the company the ability to continue to deliver innovation relevant to healthcare. With the experience gained over the past three years, BioLucid’s newest product is poised to change the way people learn and understand health. With virtual reality integration, the YOU software platform simulates the functions of healthy organs, disease, and various treatments in a way that has not been seen before. We predict that over time, YOU will play a big role in improving the healthcare conversation across education, pharma, healthcare, and eventually in the homes of patients everywhere.
